Economic Impact of FIFA World Cups: Lessons for Toronto 2026
Mega sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup generate uneven economic impacts on host cities. Drawing on evidence from Brazil (2014) and Russia (2018), this paper argues that the World Cup does not create broad-based economic growth but instead redistributes demand across geography, industries, and time.
